How to make subtitles

  1. Drop your video on the homepage or choose it. We take MP4, MOV and WebM, and audio files too: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and AAC. Long videos are split up by the browser, and you upload once.
  2. Wait a few minutes and keep the tab open.
  3. Read through the text. Under the result, open Download and pick SRT or VTT.
  4. Add the file to your video on YouTube, Vimeo or in your editor.

SRT or VTT?

Both are plain text files where each subtitle has a start and end time. SRT is the most common: YouTube, Vimeo, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve all take it. VTT (WebVTT) is made for video on web pages, and YouTube and Vimeo accept it too. If you aren't sure, take SRT.

Where to put the file

  • YouTube: in YouTube Studio, open the video, go to Subtitles, choose English and upload the file with timing.
  • Vimeo: in the video's settings, find the subtitles, upload the file and choose the language.
  • Video editor: import the SRT as a subtitle track, then pick the font and size. You can burn the text into the picture there, for example for Instagram or TikTok.

Good to know

  • It transcribes English speech. There is no translation, so you can't make Spanish subtitles from English audio here.
  • You get a subtitle file, not a video with the text burned in. Do that in a video editor.
  • There are no live captions for streams.
  • MKV and AVI files need converting to MP4 first.
  • Speaker labels are in the transcript. Check line breaks and names in your editor before publishing.

What it costs

Nothing is for sale right now. Without an account, the homepage transcribes one file up to 30 minutes. For longer videos, sign in: every account has Pro free until January, with up to 10 hours of transcription a month. No card.
